Art of the title 2
I also analyzed the opening to True Detective, also an HBO crime drama
starring Woody Harrellson and Matthew Mcconuaghey. The intro opens with a
tracking shot of the swamp lands of Louisiania where it shows the names
of the two lead actors. Interestingly, it shows the silhouettes of the
two main characters with shots of scenes show placed the silhouettes
which creates a sense of the strangeness that the show is likely to
portray. It also shows images of fire to create a dramatic event to show
that the characters are flawed and their entire world could go up in
flames at any point. It also shows abandoned playgrounds and car parks
to show the loneliness of the two characters and the sense of
abandonment the two are eventually going to feel at some point.
Religious imagery is also used to show that the crimes the two
detectives have to solve are going to be Christian based. The title
forms from a cross also indicating its religious based background. The
song they choose for the show is a country song from somewhere like
Louisiana but it's very dark and brooding which also relates to the
emotions of the characters.
