5. How did you attract/address your audience?

During my time on evaluation question 3, I learnt about the many different techniques that would go intro distributing a movie. Through this research, I discovered about the techniques that go into attracting and addressing audience.

How my movie attracts and addresses audiences?

I thought my movie would attract more of a national audience so I decided to go with Vertigo Films as my production company.
As a result, we had to think of ways in order to promote our movie. Distributors mainly use tools such as trailers,, FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, TWITTER and a film website in order to reach their target audiences. All of my target audience are likely to use social media to use things such as this. However, we create things such as posters in order to attract people who might perhaps not get their film information off social media websites. We also had an idea for a movie poster that would help lead to a competition related to our movie. It would double as a missing persons post. There would be a special QR code that would lead the viewer to the movie website through their phones. Whoever got first place would win VIP tickets to the premier, 2nd place would get a tour of the studio to meet the cast and crew and the third would win a personalised video game console related to the movie. To enter the supposed  prize draw, you  would have to take a selfie with the poster, scan the QR code that takes you to the movie website and then upload the selfie to the movie website.

In order to attract our audience, we used the same techniques that a professional distribution company would create. For example:
  • a poster for P & A
  • a film website
  • a FACEBOOK page
  •  TWITTER feed.
All these platforms would be somehow linked together, ultimately  creating a synergistic flow to the attraction of our audiences.

I created a FACEBOOK page for the movie. I tried to put as much of the film making process as possible, including information about the actors, props and location of the movie. FACEBOOK also allowed for me to promote my page, and allowed me to put many "behind the scenes" pictures on the movie.

We also used other forms of social media in order to attract audiences so that they would find out about the movie.

A TWITTER page was also created for the movie as another way of getting the film out to social media. Much like the FB page, the creator also had to put many different images and videos onto the page in order for people to understand what the film was about and the many different behind the scenes production that went on during the course of filming

What makes my movie appealing to audiences?

My movie is ultimately appealing to audiences due to its interesting setting and tone. The use of a private detective and its "noir" inspirations will make it appealing to people who like movie such as the Big Sleep, Chinatown and L.A Confidential. It's also appealing to those who have read many of the Raymond Chandler/Phillip Marlowe novels as it also explores similar themes to those books. The movie creates a very intense atmosphere as well as we combined elements of both thriller and horror. The mansion setting and "unknown" source of terror will make people excited to see where the movie will lead to. Judging from the opening movie, it will lead to greater conclusions and many would like to see where the film's story will lead from there.

Case study: National

Some movies I found were more likely to attract a national audience e.g. What we did on our Holiday. This movie very much attracted a national audience due to its relatable themes with British families. It used actors such as David Tennant and Billy Connolly, who are  well known to a British audience. It also advertised heavily how that it was from the makers of Outnumbered. This would heavily attract British audiences as their names would allow for audiences to know what sort of humour and style they would be expecting. If it was attracted to an American audience, some of the humour would not be understandable due to the fact that this sort of movie mainly appeals to British audiences.

Case Study: International

This is different to a  movie like the Hunger Games or the Avengers which very much attracts an international audience. This is due to the fact that these movies primarily rely on action. The characters that are presented in this film such as Katniss Everdeen or Iron Man  are now considered to be iconic recognized over most of the globe. This means that more people are likely going to be attracted to these films as they know these characters from merchandise and previous movies in their respective franchises. As a result, they  are more  likely to attract big box office figures.
