Nowhere Boy 17.09.14

We watched the movie Nowhere Boy directed by Sam Taylor Wood and starring Aaron Taylor Johnson. The movie focuses on a young John Lennon in Liverpool during the 1950s.We analyzed some of the camera techniques that the movie uses such as tracking shots as well as a shot reverse shot. Also, used were two man shots in which only two people are in the actual shot. An example of when this shot is most effective is during the scenes after John's uncle George dies.  Kristin Scott Thomas ( who plays John's aunt) has her back turned away from Johnson as she's trying to hide the emotion that they've both lost someone who was very important to both of them.

The  establishing shot also has its own purpose. It creates a  contrast between the august severity and rigidity of the graeco-roman pillars and the wild free running figure of John. The difference is that these buildings and pillars show a great sign of architecture of its time as it still remains magnificent to this day, It could also be a sign of the great things that John is going to do when he eventually gets older. It also creates a sense that John is different from the rest of the world that encompasses him as it shows him running during a calm morning.

We also analyzed some on the musical aspects. It mainly uses 1950s rock and roll to establish the time period as well as to show Lennon's rebellious attitude. In the sound design, the actors are forced to put on a Liverpool accent in order to show the setting of the film.

  1. You are starting to use technical language to analyse how meaning is created but you need to do more. For example, how does the establishing shot function with its contrast between the august severity and rigidity of the graeco-roman pillars and the wild free running figure of John?
