Les Bleus De Ramville

Les Bleus De Ramville is a French-Canadian TV show that won an award for its TV intro. The intro uses a wide variety of different camera techniques in order to convey the atmosphere of a hockey game in such a short period of time.

This cut in shot displays a lot of effective techniques for example. We can't see his head but we can see the gradual preparation for the game and the nervousness this character displays. The shot also allows us to see all the hockey gear, allowing for the audience to understand what goes into the game even before the actual play off.

The lone shot of the hockey mask is quite an effective way as the camera pans across the mask.It creates a massive build up to the game itself and the mask could be represented as a way of showing that they're about to "go into battle". The mask is also off center as the name of Stephan Paquette is the main focus of the frame, showing that he's an important player.

This shot gives us an idea of the strategy involved in the game of hockey. Through visual effects, we see the plan of where everything is going to go throughout the game. It gives us an idea of how tactics are important to the characters of the show. This shot is also made effective because of its use of CGI as the blue circles that represent the players and where their ultimate position is going to be.

This shot is a low angle shot that shows the intensity of the game that is being played. The players almost seem quite powering and you can feel the full force as the goalkeeper tries to maintain his position and to stop the opposition from scoring a goal.It makes the audience feel tense and the shot between the legs almost makes you feel like you're actually the puck due to the way it is shot.

This  effective  shot is when one of the players pushes a player from the opposition into the glass. This is effective as it allows a realistic view of the world of hockey, by showing the violence of the sport. It goes into slow motion to give the audience the idea of the full force and violence of the game itself. The slomo makes the audience experience every painful microsecond of the impact.

Another low angle shot is placed here, showing the reaction of one of the crowd members. The sequence is presented in slow motion showing the celebration and mad energy of the game. We see the pleasures and excitement in this man's face as we can see that his team has just scored a goal. The use of a close up on his face is very effective for these reasons  The slow motion is used here as we can see beer and popcorn being scattered all over the place, again showing how much excitement and energy is being placed both on and off the field of play.

Preliminairy

We planned and filmed a preliminairy movie featuring myself, Marcus Coupling and mainly filmed by Freddie Howe. I played a son who was getting told off by his father played by Marcus. We tried to make sure that we followed the guidelines for filming e.g. shot reverse shot, 180 degree camera rule. After we finished filming which took place over roughly 3 lessons, we edited it and picked out the shots that we wanted to use and didn't use. Not too many effects were used, although music was used when characters weren't speaking. I did learn about the editing process as I had never used Imovie before. I also learnt more about where to place a camera for a clear shot

Research:Distribution

What we did on our holiday is a British comedy released by BBC films. The main actors of the film include David Tennant, Billy Connolly and Rosamund Pike. The movie’s biggest target audience is generally that of families due to the plot of the movie focusing on a dysfunctional family with young children. The movie could also be for fans of the hit BBC show Outnumbered as it is from the creators of that show. It could also be for people who are fans of some of the actors work e.g. Billy Connolly and David Tennant have many fans due to their work on stand-up comedy and TV.

The movie is a national film as it has not been released internationally. This could be due to the fact that the humour is very British and may not appeal to American audiences. Also, actors like Billy Connolly are not as well-known as they are in the UK. The movie also has an British location  being set in Scotland which makes it more relatable    to British audiences.

Movie distribution can work in a number of different ways. For example, smaller film productions maybe shown at film festivals in order for the director to gain a major production company to help distribute the film. Bigger movies will have to buy out cinemas and decide whether it will be released in a couple of cinemas across the country, be released nationally or internationally. Also, newspapers such as the Sunday Times give movie tickets out for free at some points.

Research Distribution: Pride

Pride is a British film about the issues that many homosexuals faced in the 1980s. The movie was first screened at the Cannes film festival which allows for distributors to "pick up" an movie if they like it or not. Due to positive buzz at places such as Cannes, the French production company Pathe picked up the movie for distribution. The movie can be described as a national film due to it dealing with British issues but it is been planned to be released in the USA due to the positive reviews in the UK.
One of the film's lead actors Andrew Scott also helped create publicity telling people to go buy tickets as there is only "one week left". Also, for publicity the starts of Pride and the real LGSM stars marched down Odeon in order to help create press for the movie.

The film website is a major vehicle for addressing and attracting audiences. On the website there are clips from the movie which can be seen using "gifs”. As well as that, there is also a link to the film’s twitter page, allowing for people to follow them on Twitter to find out about certain information without them having to come back to the official site. There’s a also a link to the film’s trailer allowing for people to see footage from the movie to see whether it would be their sort of genre or not. It also has links to reviews which would help the film’s publicity due to the positive press that the film has received. Here is a link to the website of the movie http://www.pridemovie.co.uk/

Nowhere Boy 17.09.14

We watched the movie Nowhere Boy directed by Sam Taylor Wood and starring Aaron Taylor Johnson. The movie focuses on a young John Lennon in Liverpool during the 1950s.We analyzed some of the camera techniques that the movie uses such as tracking shots as well as a shot reverse shot. Also, used were two man shots in which only two people are in the actual shot. An example of when this shot is most effective is during the scenes after John's uncle George dies.  Kristin Scott Thomas ( who plays John's aunt) has her back turned away from Johnson as she's trying to hide the emotion that they've both lost someone who was very important to both of them.

The  establishing shot also has its own purpose. It creates a  contrast between the august severity and rigidity of the graeco-roman pillars and the wild free running figure of John. The difference is that these buildings and pillars show a great sign of architecture of its time as it still remains magnificent to this day, It could also be a sign of the great things that John is going to do when he eventually gets older. It also creates a sense that John is different from the rest of the world that encompasses him as it shows him running during a calm morning.

We also analyzed some on the musical aspects. It mainly uses 1950s rock and roll to establish the time period as well as to show Lennon's rebellious attitude. In the sound design, the actors are forced to put on a Liverpool accent in order to show the setting of the film.

Production company ident.

I used a new type of software called Istop motion to help us create our production name ident called Speed Media. We used a webcam to take photos of the little car that we were going to use for the ident. We then used a type of editing known as "onion skinning" to create our final piece. We got positive feedback but felt that it could've have more effect if it had sound. We also felt that there should've been more white space between the "a" and the edge of the paper.

REPRESENTATION October 2nd

Roland Barthes Mythologies (1964)

Barthes myths were considered to be the dominant ideology for the time. It shows the idea photography can manipulate people's ideas. The picture from the Paris Match below shows a young Negro boy in French uniform saluting the French flag ( the tricolour) or perhaps some sort of commanding presence that the reader of the magazine is unable to see.  It's trying to display the unity in France no matter what race you are. It is also trying to display France as this great country because it is showing this sort of unity

I decided to choose the poster for the movie Goodfellas. From the poster, we can see the three main actors in suits. This indicates that they're prosperous men and seem to be dong well in life. However, all three are meant to look quite intimidating. Robert De Niro is in the middle indicating that he's somewhat the leader of the three characters. The poster has a black background indicating that the movie has a somewhat dark tone. Below the three men, an abandoned street in New Jersey is represented with someone who has clearly been murdered. The way in which the three main actors are standing above the dead body indicates that he's been murdered and the three are in fact criminals. The tagline also gives a lot of things away about the characters. It quotes the character Ray Liotta plays saying " as far back as I can I remember, I always wanted to be a gangster". This further proves the point that they're in fact part of organized crime rather than being small time crooks. The tagline below says "three decades of life in the mafia" showing that the movie is actually about the Mafia. The three decades part also indicates that the movie is in fact a representation of sometime in the past, most likely 20th century America.

The art of the Title 1

I analysed the opening to Boardwalk Empire, an HBO crime drama starring Steve Busemi and produced by Martin Scorsese. Boardwalk Empire uses its intro to show the main character of Nucky Thompson as somewhat of a leader and powerful man during a time of extreme amounts of crime. It shows him looking out to sea almost to show that he "owns the place". The beach is shown as abandoned to demonstrate his power that no one will come near him as as result of his presence. The image of crashing waves and smashing bottles do represent that his power may not last for long. Like any criminal, his kingdom and power will not last forever and everything will come crashing down on top of him. The bottles also represent the 1920s prohibition period and establishes to its audience of the period from the very first episode.
The titles also come out in different ways. The word "empire" is bigger of the two words in the title as it almost demonstrates the power of Nucky's empire. It's also presented as flashy and big much like the period of the 1920s itself. Some of the actors names also come out in interesting ways e.g. Steve Busecmi's name is presented when the tide comes in.
