5. Attracting and Adressing audiences

Movie poster doubles as a missing persons poster

QR code in the corner of the poster that takes the viewer to the movie website

The website shows instructions on how to enter a prize draw.
1st place gets VIP premier tickets
2nd place gets a tour of the studio meets the actors
3rd place wins a personalised movie console of  their choice.
To enter the prize draw you take a selfie with the poster, scan the QR code that takes you to the movie website and then upload the selfie to the movie website.
In order to attract our audience, we used the same techniques that a professional distribution company would create:
a poster for P & A
a film website
a Facebook page
 and a Twitter feed.
All these platforms are linked, creating a synergistic whole.

Art of the title 3

The final intro I'm going to talk about is Dexter. Dexter is a crime drama produced by Showtime about a serial killer. The intro is very interesting as it really just goes through the morning of Dexter. It's mainly about him eating breakfast and waking up. However, due to the way it's shot it seems like he's murdering someone, when really it's just him cutting up an orange or making coffee. The music also displays that it's somewhat odd to think of a serial killer doing something that normal people would do. It never shows him murdering someone and it looks like he's quite ordinary.
man. However, due to the way its show, the audience knows there's something not quite right with Dexter.
It does use extreme close ups and imagery of blood. When he's cutting the fried egg, the "juice" almost looks like blood and he's cutting up someone, just like how he does it in the show. The opening shot establishes  blood as he kills a mosquito. The title then comes up with blood coming out indicating the character's fascination with blood.

Art of the title 2

I also analyzed the opening to True Detective, also an HBO crime drama starring Woody Harrellson and Matthew Mcconuaghey. The intro opens with a tracking shot of the swamp lands of Louisiania where it shows the names of the two lead actors. Interestingly, it shows the silhouettes of the two main characters with shots of scenes show placed  the silhouettes which creates a sense of the strangeness that the show is likely to portray. It also shows images of fire to create a dramatic event to show that the characters are flawed and their entire world could go up in flames at any point. It also shows abandoned playgrounds and car parks to show the loneliness of the two characters and the sense of abandonment the two are eventually going to feel at some point. Religious imagery is also used to show that the crimes the two detectives have to solve are going to be Christian based. The title  forms from a cross also indicating its religious based background. The song they choose for the show is a country song from somewhere like Louisiana but it's very dark and brooding which also relates to the emotions of the characters.

Storyboards

During the preparation stage of our movie, we decided to make storyboards. These were mainly designed to help us with what every individual scene was going to look like. It helped us think how to shoot the film. The descriptions below demonstrated about what the shot type would be e.g. whether we would use a tracking shot for one scene or a pan for another.

It also was an easier way of deciding what the ultimate chronology of the movie would be, allowing for an alternative method if we were somehow not able to use the shot list.

Planning: Location recce

I took these series of photos as I did a location recce. These photos were mainly taken during our media lesson. They were taken behind the Claremont Fan Court School mansion and around Claremont Landscape garden. As a result of the old Victorian look of these buildings, I felt that many creepy and atmospheric moments could be created in our movie.

This shot and location outside the mansion  was an effective one.  The steam allows for an eerie atmosphere and almost could be a good replacement for something like fog. The steam could make an interesting shot and could be used as part of a tracking shot leading up to the mansion.

This panorama shot of a lake in Claremont Landscape Gardens was another location our group thought we could use. The location is quite a beautiful and stunning one which allows for a good location to shoot. The trees are also very symmetrical which allows for another interesting shot. However, due to the area being usually quiet it can be a good place to film as there would be no one who would get in the way of shooting. This abandonment could also be a good idea for our movie as it could create the feeling of loneliness.
This is also another possibility for a lake that we could possibly use for the movie. Again, this is another scene and setting of beauty and is also quite quiet on most days so it would be another interesting place to shoot.
Near and around Claremont Landscape Gardens are lots of woods. Woods are very commonly associated with eery atmospheres. The autumn weather could also make for some interesting shots and sounds with the rustling of the leaves.

I also made a picmonkey collage as an easier and better looking way of looking at the pictures we took for the recee

Research: How brands target audiences?

I started to investigate in what ways I could advertise my AS production. The best method in my opinion would be to using social media such as Facebook and Twitter. I would create pages for the movie and let people know about it. I'll also create a movie poster on Photoshop as another way to advertise our movie.

In addition to that, I'll try and use the advertising methods to target my specific audience and find out why my movie sticks out from the rest of the crowd.

1. Who is my primary target audience?
The general public, mainly people who are fans of horrors/thrillers. I would suggest that the age rating for our film if it was turned into a proper feature would have a 15 rating. Influence from movies such as Shutter Island and video games such as the  Silent Hill games were our main inspiration. The movie Angel Heart starring Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro was also an inspiration in creating a thriller/ detective film set in the 1950s period. We would expect people who liked both this movie and video games would enjoy the style of film making and genre of our movie. TV shows such as American Horror Story also gave us inspiration.

2. What makes my film stand out from the competition?
Unlike many modern day conventional thrillers, our one decides to use a period setting which allows us to experiment with the time period and allows us to explore events that happened around then e.g. post war Britain. The idea of using a private detective as our main character allows us to take elements from the style of noir film making. This style hasn't been explored so much in recent movies so we thought it would be an interesting idea to explore.

3. Why should my audience watch my film?
The audience should watch our film if they want something different in the horror genre that relies more on atmosphere and story rather than gore and "jump scares". The movie is designed to make you feel at unease and rather claustrophobic in some cases due to the asylum setting. The 1950s setting also allows for a different setting rather than the normal present day setting that most other movies rely on.

Audiences can be segmented and defined by their GEARS
Gender
Ethnicity
Age
Region / nationality
Socio-economic group

From the research that I've done, I found that many different products whether they were movies or magazines have their own specific target audience. These audiences are defined by a number of different things such as age, gender and their social stance. These examples from Bauer Media Advertising helped me understand what types of people read these magazines.

As seen from these individual graphs, there's a difference in audiences between the two. Empire and FHM have a very male dominated audience whilst Closer and Heat have a female dominated audience. This is mainly due to the fact that these topics are generally enjoyed more by their certain gender. Closer and Heat are more popular with females due to the fascination with celebrity culture. FHM and Empire are male dominated as they focus on things that men enjoy more than women.

There are many different models that help us demonstrate audience behavior. An example of this is the media effects model.
This model sees the audience as passively led and they are influenced by everything around them. For example, if a celebrity is wearing some sort of clothing brand, people will automatically get it due to the fact they are impressionable. The model also shows that people have a variety of different needs.
These include:

  • entertainment / escapism / distraction
  • seeking information (somethings called surveillance)
  • personal identity (to support out world view)
  • and social relationships (both on-screen and off)

Another example that helps us understand audience behavior is Maslowe's Hierarchy of Needs. This shows the different levels of needs that people have and what the most important things are.
